  Having a personal and family history of severe, chronic back problems, I was terrified of the prospect of a lumbar spinal fusion. As a result of the fear, I did not submit to surgery until my body shut down and I attempted suicide due to the excruciating pain and diminished quality of life. Unfortunately my delayed decision was based on fear and not the reality of what was to come.
